In October 2017 The Melting Pot celebrated a remarkable 10 years as Scotland’s Centre for Social Innovation. Yvonne Strachan, former Head of Equality, Human Rights & Third Sector at Scottish Government, sent us these kind words to mark the happy occasion.
Yvonne has worked throughout her career to strengthen social enterprise and social entrepreneurship in Scotland. She has shown her support for The Melting Pot on many occasions, and took time out the week before her retirement to make this video:
“You’re part of the landscape but never part of the furniture.”
Yvonne Strachan, Scottish Government
The Melting Pot was the first coworking space in Scotland. We’ve brought inspiration at work to around 1000 coworking members and every year some 10,000 people attend events in our venues. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg: as Scotland’s Centre for Social Innovation we have been igniting, supporting and affecting social change for over a decade.
The Good Ideas Academy, our incubation programme, has supported 77 founders of socially innovative organisations. Alumni include Sophie Unwin who’s leading a repair revolution with the Remakery and Chris Hellawell who brought the UK’s first Tool Library to Edinburgh. This year, alumni Eve Hepburn founded Fearless Femme, an online magazine that empowers young women to overcome stress and anxiety. Thanks to Scottish Government, Fearless Femme will launch in January 2018.
Over the last decade, The Melting Pot has become an institution. As Yvonne says we “challenge and encourage [people] to think differently” and we believe that Quality Coworking spaces have the power to reinvigorate Scottish towns and create inspiring places to work, meet, learn and connect across the globe. In 2017 we launched the Coworking Accelerator Network to share our knowledge and help other coworking spaces create similarly resilient, enterprising communities. Scottish Government share our vision, they have written coworking into the Social Enterprise Strategy for the next 10 years and named the Coworking Accelerator Network as a key support for delivering their commitment to coworking.
The support of Scottish Government and people like Yvonne has been instrumental to The Melting Pot’s success. It meant a lot to hear from her before she retired.
Thank you Yvonne, we wish you a very happy retirement!
