'Understanding the 99% - Implications of the global Occupy movement in local contexts'
Rapidly establishing itself as a movement targeting social and economic inequality, Occupy has spread across a wide variety of locations uniting people with its simple message that changes must be made to the powerful bureaucratic mechanisms that are exercising power over entire populations. However, with no direct manifesto, and an explicitly non-hierarchical organisational structure, the direction of Occupy is unclear. For those of us who make up ‘the 99%’, and who are not involved in direct action and protest, what does Occupy expect of us? And what does Occupy mean for our own social change organisations and aspirations?
Join Claire, Duncan, Michelle and David who will kick-start our ‘fishbowl’ debating structure, which gives everyone a chance to be on the panel. Bring your opinions, myths, facts and confused perceptions, to discuss this contemporary phenomenon. Bring your own booze and we’ll provide the nibbles. If 7:30pm proves too restrictive an end time, things may well continue at a local watering hole!
